Smokey Split Pea Soup Recipe

"Prepare this Split Pea Soup Recipe without the ham and take extra sodium savings!"

Image of Split Pea Soup Recipe. There is something wonderful about the aroma of split pea soup simmering in your kitchen.

The carrots add a sweetness not usually found in other split pea soups. And if you don't have a leek, simply add a bit more onion (maybe half and onion) to make up for the volume.

As an alternative to cooking this split pea soup recipe on your stovetop, this easy soup recipe can be prepared in your crockpot, and left to simmer all day.

Although ham is traditionally high in sodium, we like the smoky flavor that adding ham lends to this soup recipe.

If your diet is really strict, ask your butcher for a ham bone and strip any remaining meat off the bone before you add it to your soup.

If you pair this recipe with a green salad that has lots of dark leafy greens in it, you will be adding potassium to your meal which will help to reduce the total amount of salt per serving.
